What are the ages of the children in your home?
How many puppies or dogs have you raised in your lifetime? There is no wrong answer here.
Do you have a fenced yard or live in an apartment/condo and will take your puppy for breaks and exercise? (This does not affect your approval)
Describe the perfect personality of your dog. * Please note that aussies are not low energy, calm or even snuggly lap dogs until they reach adulthood.
What is your color and sex preference and why? Acceptable colors of the Australian Shepherd are red tri, black tri, blue merle and red merle with or without copper points.
Do you plan on doing any obedience, agility, rally, conformation, herding, breeding, therapy or service dog training?
What other pets are in your home?
How do you feel about crate training your puppy? Do you think it is important and do you know the benefits of it?
I understand that Aussies and Mini Aussies are active, energetic dogs that need mental and physical exercise and my entire family is prepared to use training tools to maintain proper discipline for my aussies needs. Most adolescents and adult aussies CANNOT be walked on a harness or regular buckle collar without pulling excessively. I might recommend you to use a gentle leader (Halti) or prong collar to maintain control. Harnesess are more appropriate for little dogs. Have you ever seen anyone control a horse with a harness? No, large animals are controlled by a head halter, it is most effective.

I understand Aussies are a double coated breed and will need to be groomed on a regular basis. I also understand that Aussies shed all year round. In general, weekly brushing sessions will keep the Australian Shepherd’s coat looking its best. They should be bathed and blow dried every 6-8 weeks to maintain a healthy coat. As with all breeds, the Aussie‘s nails should be trimmed regularly.

Yes I understand, I will contact a groomer close to me
Yes I understand, I will be using you as my groomer
No, I cannot afford to have my dog regularly groomed
I understand Aussies need extensive work and training. * Early socialization and obedience training are both musts for the Australian Shepherd. One of the most frequent reasons Aussies end up in rescue situations is owners couldn’t (or wouldn’t) correct lunging at strangers or other dogs, allow excessive barking and encouraging bad behaviors. Aussies can be territorial and overprotective of their owners’ property. Fortunately, that loyalty combined with the breed’s keen intelligence and high energy makes them very easy to train.
Yes I will sign up for an obedience class
No I will train the dog myself
Do you plan on spaying and neutering?

Please describe your general lifestyle and activities
What is your profession and does it require you to relocate often?
Do you have a veterinarian lined up?
What are your plans for when you go on vacation?
Are you committed to feeding high quality dog food?
Yes, I already feed high quality dog food because I have another dog
Yes, but I would like suggestions
This breed often overeats. Do not fall for the dog food manufacturer's recommended daily food intake. Under a year old you can feed them ample food, but once you spay/neuter, literally their calorie intake changes. Will you commit to feeding less and being aware of your dogs waistline?
